Welcome To Michael DiMercurio's USS Devilfish Patrol Report!

September 4, 2002

an interview with Michael DiMercurio...

The following interview was conducted by Bill Parker, president of Parker Information Resources, Michael DiMercurio’s terminalrun.com webmaster, and webmaster to Dale Brown's Megafortress.Com.

Q: So, what goodies does TERMINAL RUN have for us?

A: In the tradition of VOYAGE OF THE DEVILFISH, there's some excellent submarine story action that includes a father-son plot. It’s drawn from some of my early experiences as a midshipman aboard the USS Pargo, when I learned the pain of being a nonqual airbreather rider, but soon came up “on the step” and got qualified as a watchstander.

TERMINAL RUN follows young midshipman Anthony Michael “Patch” Pacino as he reports aboard the deploying USS Piranha, which has been dispatched on a mission so secret only her captain (legendary Rob Catardi) knows the details, and only minutes before sailing has he been briefed.

Young Patch is the son of former Admiral Michael Pacino, who was Chief of Naval Operations until last summer’s terrorist attack that sank the Navy’s senior officer stand-down cruise ship. Pacino senior is a haunted shadow of his former self, trying to recover from the loss by sailing his yacht on a circumnavigation. That is, until the new Chief of Naval Operations sends for him for an urgent mission.

Meanwhile, far at sea, the robotic combat nuclear fast attack submarine Snarc has not been heard from. The Pentagon’s worst fears are realized as she is electronically hijacked by the terrorist group responsible for the cruise ship sinking. Their intent, to second Snarc to the Chinese as Red China commences its nuclear mobilization against the Hindu Republic of India. The mission of Rob Catardi’s Piranha: find Snarc and sink her.

As the Piranha, with young Midshipman Pacino onboard, searches for the Snarc, the USS Leopard lurks in the Bo Hai Bay off Beijing, ready to take out the first Chinese surface battle group on the way to the Indian Ocean, but her commander didn’ t count on the newest Red Chinese SSN, the Nung Yahtsu – loosely translated, Teeth of the Dragon.

The developing war with China grows more deadly, emptying the U.S. piers of all warships, with every submarine and surface warship scrambled to the Indian Ocean. The Snarc gets Piranha in her sights and the battle rages. When former Admiral Michael Pacino is called with the news that his son and the Piranha are on the bottom, he is ordered to go to sea and do what Piranha couldn’t – to find the Snarc and put her down before she comes calling on the unprotected Eastern Seaboard. But all he can think about is his son, two miles beneath the surface of the Atlantic, trapped in a deep submergence vehicle inside the wreckage of the Piranha.

Q: Excellent! But dude, it was long wait for this one – what took so long?

A: TERMINAL RUN turned out to be quite a project. Instead of the usual year from start to finish, its outline was done in Oct 99 and it was written in first draft in 2000 and submitted in Jan 01. I and my editor Doug Grad (new to me, but the number one maker of thriller NYT bestsellers) reworked it in two complete rewrites in 2001. Doug is the master of suspense, and didn’t care for the original ending. He challenged me to improve, and the new ending had him up all night. He loved it, and now the buzz inside Penguin Putnam is that TERMINAL RUN is a killer. We just spent months on the submarine artwork. I can say this – it was worth every minute spent. TERMINAL RUN is the best DiMercurio book written.

Q: Does TERMINAL RUN take up where THREAT VECTOR left off?

A: Like all my books, TERMINAL RUN is self-contained. You don’t even need to have heard of Michael DiMercurio to love it. But if you’ve lived through the career of former submarine captain Michael Pacino, TERMINAL RUN will be that much more meaningful to you.

Q: So what’s next in the series?

A: I’m on deadline for the next book (TITLE CLASSIFIED), which is extremely cool. The one thing about the new book is that it “resets the counter” to today, to this very minute. Since VOYAGE OF THE DEVILFISH started in present day, six books later it was out there a few decades, with technology and politics evolving with the reality of Pacino. The new novel takes place next week, with all the exciting details of the Virginia-class submarines.

Q: Where can your readers find out more about how you write and your books?

A: Go to terminalrun.com, the website. There you’ll find book synopses, the history of the career of Michael Pacino, frequently asked questions about me as a writer and about my private life, photographs and sea stories of my submarine career and beyond, and – of course – news. And anyone can shoot me an E-mail to readermail@terminalrun.com – I answer each one personally, although it may take time (be patient!).

Q: What’s all this about THE COMPLETE IDIOT’S GUIDE TO SUBMARINES?

A: My agent, Jake Elwell of Wieser & Wieser, approached me about doing a light-hearted nonfiction book with Michael Benson, who has written other CIGs. This one would focus on the modern nuclear submarine and what makes it tick. Check out the brief outline – it has some incredibly cool stuff, like how to startup a reactor and take a nuke sub to sea, and once you’re there, how to come to periscope depth, how to shoot a skimmer (surface ship), how to shoot another submarine – and how to find one in the first place. You’ll get the inside scoop on sensors, nuclear power and the black details of submarine operations.

A terrorist cabal has acquired a scrapped Soviet sub from the Cold War -- a technologically advanced failure still able to outrun any torpedo or enemy vessel and strike at will. With a nuclear payload, it will enable them to strike directly at Israeland throw the world into chaos. All that remains is to modernize the sub with the latest technology.

Only one man can infiltrate the group, take the helm, and stop a holocaust -- a man who has already stared down death, and is ready to do battle once more…

“Compelling and visionary. DiMercurio’s characters run as deep as his submarines themselves!”
