Echo -- -- Name of one of the first generation of Russian nuclear submarines. Also a return ping from a contact hit with active sonar.

Electronics Countermeasures -- -- Detection of threats and targets using the electromagnetic spectrum. Detection of radio signals and radars yields valuable intelligence in the target environment. Also called ESM for electronic signal measures.

Electronics Countermeasures Cubicle -- -- Small room where the ESM equipment is operated.

EMBT Blow -- -- Emergency Main Ballast Tank Blow.

Emergency Blow -- -- Blowing the water out of the main ballast tanks using ultra-high pressure air. Empties ballast tanks in seconds, lightening the ship and allowing it to get to the surface in an emergency such as flooding.

Eng -- -- Chief Engineer, pronounced with a soft g.

EPM (Emergency Propulsion Motor) -- -- A large DC motor aft in the engineroom, capable of turning the shaft to achieve three knots using battery power alone. The EPM is an electricity hog and will exhaust the battery in a matter of fifteen or twenty minutes.

EO (Electrical Operator) -- -- Enlisted nuclear-qualified watchstander who mans the Electric Plant Control Panel (EPCP) and reports to the EOOW.

EOOW (Engineering Officer of the Watch) -- -- Nuclear-qualified officer who runs the nuclear power plant. Responsible to the OOD for propulsion and propulsion plant damage control.

Escape Trunk -- -- A spherical airlock used on American nuclear submarines. The device can be used to make an emergency exit from a sub sunk in shallow water. Principally used for divers to lock in or lock out.

Ethan Allen -- -- First class of U.S. boomers to fire Polaris missiles.

Exocet -- -- French antiship cruise missile.

EWS (Engineering Watch Supervisor) -- -- A chief who is a roving supervisory watchstander in the engineering spaces. Reports to the EOOW.
